A bonfire in Co Down has been set on fire one week before the Eleventh Night.

It happened in the early hours of Thursday morning on Lisburn Street in Ballynahinch.

A mechanical digger which was sent by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is at the scene to help dampen the fire.

A fire engine from Carryduff fire station is also in attendance.

A request has been made by those who built the bonfire for people in surrounding areas to give pallets to build it up again by next week.

The fire service said they are treating the incident as a "deliberate ignition".

After receiving a call just after 5.45am, two crews from Ballynahinch fire station were sent to deal with the blaze.
