Bangor crash driver put blame on his sat nav

By Paul Higgins

A driver who caused a three-car pile-up after he followed his sat nav's directions has been banned for a year and fined £400.

Newtownards Magistrates Court heard that Stefan Stefanov (32) was heading towards Bangor close to the Holywood Exchange when his sat nav told him to do a U-turn on March 28.

A prosecutor told the court that father-of-two Stefanov tried to use a gap in the central reservation but clipped the rear of a VW Polo, pushing that car into the path of a Vauxhall Insignia. Police and paramedics were called to the scene, the lawyer said, and the driver of the Insignia had to be treated for whiplash.

Arrested and interviewed Stefanov, from Altmore Drive in Dungannon, admitted that he had taken a wrong turn and was following his sat nav's directions to do a U-turn.

Defence barrister Chris Holmes said it was an example of a driver "paying more attention" to a sat nav than the road ahead, conceding it was "basically inexcusable".
