A man has been hospitalised following a "despicable" paramilitary-style assault in Bangor, police have said.

The attack happened at around 8pm on Thursday at the football pitches in the Kilcooley area of the town.

Police said the victim, who is in his 30s, was assaulted and suffered injuries to his arm.

He was taken to hospital for treatment, where he remained on Friday afternoon.

PSNI Detective Sergeant Westbury said: “This was a despicable attack, and those involved in this type of attack do not represent the interests of any community, nor do they contribute anything to it.

“I want to appeal to anyone who was in the area last night and saw what occurred, or anyone who has information which may help our investigation and help identify those responsible for this despicable attack to pick up the phone and tell us what you know by calling detectives in Bangor on 101, and quoting reference number 1744 of 14/11/19.”

Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
