Bangor man walks 2,000-mile trail

A Bangor man tackled bears and extreme conditions to become the first person from Northern Ireland to complete the 2,179-mile ‘thru hike’ along the famous Appalachian Trail in America.

Retired civil servant Roger Greeves (58) had to deal with black bears, raccoons and mosquitoes to finish the trail in 166 days.

He had to scare off two big black bears that came within feet of his tent as he cooked his food at night.

Of the 2,000 people who start the trail each year only 200 complete it. A true ‘thru hiker’ is someone who completes the trail within a 12-month period.

Roger has been walking for 25 years and traversed parts of the Andes, the Pyrenees and the Himalayan foothills.
