Banned: Sword comes down on cars at Game of Thrones Dark Hedges in Northern Ireland

Cars and tourist buses are to be banned for driving down the iconic Dark Hedges road in Co Antrim from the end of the month.

The Department for Infrastructure has issued an order barring everything except agricultural and emergency vehicles and those needing access to land in the area from driving down the beech-tree lined avenue of the Bregagh Road, near Armoy from October 30.

Motorists found flouting the ban could be hit with a £1,000 fine.

The location became famous the world over when it was used, briefly as the Kings Road, in the hit HBO show Game of Thrones.

It also featured in a recent Transformers movie.

The location has become a magnet for tourists. There is even a Game of Thrones-themed hotel nearby.

However, such is its popularity concerns have been increasing over the safety of the famous trees. Constant traffic in the area has been eroding the road in come cases causing trees to come down.

Recently there have been calls for the department to step with thousands signing a petition calling for a ban.

The Department for Infrastructure said there were four objections received over its ban.
