Batman Live to swoop down on Belfast

By Catherine Lynagh

Holy pyrotechnics, Batman, a spectacular live arena show featuring the caped crusader is coming to Belfast.

It’s just come through on the Batphone that a certain Gotham City billionaire will be fighting a host of very familiar enemies on a Belfast stage next summer.

Flanked by his trusty sidekick Robin and butler Alfred, the Dark Knight will be swooping in for the eye-popping Hollywood export — Batman Live.

Before your very eyes playboy philanthropist Bruce Wayne will transform into his alter ego to fight crime in the heart of a different UK city each week.

Expect to see your favourite Batman stunts, pyrotechnics and illusions. The show is neither a musical nor a Broadway-bound theatrical production, but rather an elaborate arena production aimed at kids and families.

Offering a completely new way to experience the world of Batman, it will be a must-see for fans.

The show’s makers Warner Bros and DC Entertainment describe the event as a unique action-packed live show, which will feature a host of Batman characters, including villains The Joker, The Riddler, Catwoman and The Penguin.

The story will take place in several settings from the famed DC Comics stories, including Gotham City, Wayne Manor, the batcave and Arkham Asylum.

“With the touring Batman Live show, we're bringing Batman's adventures to live audiences for the very first time,” DC Comics spokesman Geoff Johns said.

“The idea that we're doing it with a production team this talented and with this much passion is thrilling.”

Jim Lee, co-publisher, DC Comics said: “When a character has as wide an audience and as rich a history as Batman, it's truly exciting to see him introduced into an all-new storytelling medium.

“Batman Live will bring a completely new experience to fans of the character — it's great to be able to give them something they haven't seen before.”

“Batman is one of the most iconic and recognisable brands in the world,” Warner Bros president Brad Globe said.

“For the very first time, we are bringing the world of Batman to life in a live show. And the fact that we are doing it within arena-sized venues is sure to be a thrill for audiences of all ages.”

The show will open in Manchester on July 20 before visiting Newcastle, Glasgow, Sheffield, Birmingham, London, Liverpool, Nottingham, Dublin and Belfast. Specific city dates have not been announced yet, but tickets go on sale this Friday, November 12.
