Beach find body may be missing dad-of-two

By Claire Williamson

A body discovered by a group of schoolchildren while on a field trip is believed to be a missing Belfast man.

Local reports suggest that the man found at Magilligan beach on Tuesday morning was John McIlwaine from Belfast.

Police launched an appeal for the father-of-two at the beginning of May.

The 54-year-old was last seen in Strand Road in Portstewart, where he has a holiday home, on Wednesday, April 23.

Friends close to the family have said they are devastated.

The P7 pupils from the Model Primary School in Londonderry found the body at Magilligan beach during a nature trail outing.

The class of 27 children had been combing the beach in small groups when five of them saw the outline of a body and reported it to their teacher. School principal Paul Sheridan said: "They saw the body from a short distance away and then they did the right thing by telling their teachers."
