Belfast benefits cheat may lose her home
A 57-year-old Belfast housewife who admitted cheating the benefits system faces losing her home in an effort to pay back £16,000 she was not entitled to.
Belfast Crown Court heard that Carol Crawford had on four occasions failed to notify the authorities of a change in her circumstances, which would have affected her benefit claim.
She appeared in court yesterday where her 16-month jail term was suspended for two years.
Judge Corinne Philpott QC told her that had she used the £16,000 she had in savings to pay back the overpaid benefits she would not now be facing a confiscation hearing, which could lead to the loss of her home in Crimea Street.
Judge Philpott, who said that those monies had since been "dissipated", however, ordered that £3,000 handed in to court to be forwarded to the confiscation agency.
