Material collected for a Belfast bonfire has been removed and disposed of for a second time in so many days.

The material had gathered at Bloomfield Walkway in east Belfast.  Council workers moved in on Tuesday to remove material which had been collected over recent days. They returned to the site on Wednesday to again remove material.

Last year the Bloomfield Walkway bonfire in the east of the city sparked controversy which ended in the High Court intervening and private, masked contractors moving in to take away material to reduce its height after it was found to pose a "serious threat" to homes in the area.

The court last year heard the Bloomfiled Walkway pyre was under the control of "sinister forces" within the east Belfast UVF.

Police were attacked and the material set alight during the subsequent operation to remove material.

There was also controversy when it was revealed Belfast City Council was storing thousands of pallets for bonfires which were later stolen. The pallets were for the Chobham and Hope Street bonfires.

All the material removed from the Bloomfield Walkway this week was disposed it, the council confirmed.

It said the material was removed in conjunction with Department for Infrastructure as the landowner, elected members and community representatives.

Meanwhile, it is understood there will be only be a small token bonfire for a children's party at the Bloomfield site this year as an alternative location had been found for the main pyre.

It comes after UUP councillor Jim Rodgers said it was "too early" to collect material for bonfires and residents in the area would welcome its relocation.
