By Staff Reporter

A man run over by a car he was allegedly trying to hijack in Belfast city centre has been charged.

Police said a man armed with an imitation firearm stepped in front of a car on North Street in an apparent attempt to hijack it at around 8.30pm on Monday.

However, the man was struck by the car.

He was arrested and taken to hospital. Last night, Detective Inspector Jenna Fitzpatrick said a 23-year-old man has been charged with attempted hijacking, disorderly behaviour and possession of a firearm or imitation firearm in suspicious circumstances. He is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court.
