Belfast firefighter is injured in attack by mob
A firefighter has been injured after his crew came under attack from a crowd of stone-throwing youths at playing fields.
He is at least the third firefighter to have been attacked and hospitalised in north Belfast in just over three weeks.
The Fire and Rescue Service was called to a building site at Ballysillan Playing Fields at around 8.15pm yesterday, when it was confronted by around 60 youths.
They hurled stones and bricks at the firefighters as the crew tried to move in to deal with a blaze started with building materials close to a JCB digger.
One firefighter was struck on the leg and foot and was taken to the Mater Hospital. His condition was not known last night. Damage was also caused to the fire truck.
The crew was forced to withdraw, and police arrived at the scene shortly afterwards. Another crew was called to the same scene later to deal with another blaze.
Last month two firefighters were hurt in a vicious attack by youths in the New Lodge.
