Belfast Harbour: Man critical after accident at work

By David Young

A man was in a critical condition last night after a workplace incident at Hayes Fuels' premises in Belfast Harbour Estate yesterday.

It's believed a 45-year-old man became trapped in a coal conveyor belt. A rapid response paramedic was on the scene within five minutes, and an Ambulance Service doctor treated the seriously injured man at the scene. Three fire and rescue appliances were also dispatched.

The injured man was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital where he had emergency surgery. Last night, he was in an intensive care unit.

A spokesman for Belfast Harbour said Harbour Police were investigating the incident with the Health and Safety Executive. No one at Hayes Fuels could be reached for comment.
