Belfast's outgoing Lord Mayor Brian Kingston has spoken of his "heartbreak" at the death of his father.
Dr Abram Richard Kingston - known to his friends as Dick - passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 86 after suffering dementia for a number of years.
Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, Mr Kingston said: "Even though we realised he was deteriorating, it is a great shock when it happens, and to think that we will not see him again in this lifetime.
"We are content to know that he is at peace and we believe that he has gone on to a better place."
The funeral will take place later this week at South Belfast Methodist Church.
Mr Kingston hands over his chain of office to Alliance's Nuala McAllister on Thursday.
