Belfast man convicted for £45k benefit fraud

A man was convicted at Belfast Crown Court on Friday for claiming over £45,000 in benefits he was not entitled to.

John Watson (67) of Island Street, Belfast claimed Housing Benefit totalling £45,035 while failing to declare a non-dependant.

He was given a 12 month prison sentence suspended for three years. The fraud was uncovered following an investigation by the Department for Communities.

Watson was ordered to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained.

Meanwhile in a separate case Alastair Lennox (51) of Mussenden View, Coleraine, was found to have wrongfully claimed Carer’s Allowance and Housing Rates totalling £4,350.47 while failing to declare employment.

At Coleraine Magistrates' Court on Friday, he was given a three month prison sentence suspended for one year.

Lennox was also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the department.
