By Alan Erwin

A Belfast man appeared in court today accused of trying to murder his brother.

Philip McDowell was detained in connection with an alleged stabbing incident in the Short Strand area on Wednesday.

The 43-year-old, of Harper Street in the city, is charged with the attempted murder of Maurice McDowell.

He is further accused of having a bladed article in a public place, namely Madrid Street.

Appearing in the dock at Belfast Magistrates' Court, McDowell spoke only to confirm he understood the allegations against him.

A detective constable said he could connect him to the charges.

McDowell's lawyer did not question the officer or seek bail at this stage.

He indicated that an application to have his client released will be mounted next week.

The accused was remanded into custody to appear again by video-link on Monday.
