A 52-year-old Belfast man who tried to get back with his former partner by launching a drunken attack has been jailed for 16 months – despite her forgiveness.
The man, who can't be named to protect the identity of his former girlfriend, pleaded guilty last week to causing grevious bodily harm to his one-time lover in May 2012, and to touching her without consent.
Judge Donna McColgan QC said the man showed up at the woman's home, and she offered him a bed for the night in the spare room as he had been sleeping rough.
They had had an intimate relationship in the past, and the man "was still interested". The woman was in her living room when the man began talking to her in a sexual manner. When she rebuffed him, he began punching her in the face and grabbed her by the throat.
She managed to escape into her bedroom but was followed by her attacker who began touching her. The woman suffered a fractured jaw in the attack.
Judge McColgan said the victim was relieved at the man's guilty pleas and that she bears him no ill-will. She put him on the Sex Offenders' Register for 10 years.
