Belfast pensioner killed in Co Sligo car crash

A 69-year-old Belfast man has died after the car he was driving hit a ditch in Co Sligo.

The incident happened at Castlegal in Cliffoney at about 3pm on Monday.

He was named locally as John Niall Greenan from the Malone area of south Belfast.

The pensioner was the sole occupant of the car and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

His body has been taken to Sligo University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place.

Gardai have carried out a technical and forensic examination of the scene and the road has been reopened to traffic.

Garda spokesman said:"A technical and forensic examination of the scene has been completed by Garda forensic collision investigators and the road has since been reopened to traffic.

"Investigating Gardai are appealing to witnesses to contact Sligo Garda Station on 071-9157000, the Garda Confidential Line 1 800 666 111 or any Garda Station."
