A man has been arrested after a west Belfast resident returned home to find her property had been broken into and a suspect asleep in her home.

The incident happened on the Cavendish Square area in the west of the city just before 9pm on Thursday.

The resident was confronted by broken glass and a young man asleep in their home.

A PSNI officer, posting on West Belfast PSNI's Facebook page, said: "They called us on 999 and crews were immediately tasked. We have arrested sleeping beauty - a 19 year old male - on suspicion of a number of offences including burglary, assaulting police and possession of a class B drug. He is currently helping with our enquiries."

Police are also investigating three other burglaries in the Stewartstown Road, Clonavogie Gardens and Falls Road areas that were reported throughout the day on Thursday.

"While we do not believe any of these incidents are linked, please contact us if you see anyone acting suspiciously in your area," the officer said.

"Remember to always keep doors locked, close and lock windows and doors at night or when your home is unoccupied, and don’t leave car keys near windows or doors – an opportunist criminal only needs a matter of seconds to steal your belongings."
