Belfast rush hour security alert behind roads chaos
A security alert caused severe disruption on one of Belfast's main arterial routes yesterday.
The Antrim Road in the north of the city was closed in both directions at its junction with the New Lodge Road and Carlisle Circus for several hours.
The alert was declared over at around 8pm and residents who had been evacuated from their homes were allowed to return.
Detective Inspector Paul Rowland said a suspicious device had been discovered by workmen as they were clearing drains. It was taken away for examination to determine if it was viable.
SDLP North Belfast councillor Paul McCusker said: "This area of the city has schools and is a densely populated residential area.
"We could have been dealing with a significant tragedy here.
"Those behind this device have nothing to offer the people of north Belfast."
Mr McCusker added: "This is a major thoroughfare in the north of the city and the disruption was significant."
