Belfast school uniform recycling drive vies for top award
A school uniform recycling scheme in Belfast has reached the finals of a prestigious national award for community projects.
The Church of God Shankill and Conway Youth Centre also picked up the regional award for best start-up at the Love Britain + Ireland Awards at the Stormont Hotel.
The project helps families who are struggling to pay the spiralling cost of school uniforms. Last year 3,224 pieces of uniform donations helped 159 families.
Pastor Stephen Reynolds said: "The project was birthed out of a number of families approaching us for help with buying uniforms for their children starting school, as they financially could not afford to purchase the uniforms for themselves.
"Even with the Education Authority uniform grant, they could not manage."
The national final will be held in London on October 9.
