Belfast set for a blooming great time with Rose Week

By Linda Stewart

A million roses will go on display for Rose Week in Belfast, running from July 18 until July 24.

Yesterday, Miss Northern Ireland Emma Carswell joined councillor Matt Garrett to launch the event, which will see the flowers showcased at Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park.

There will also be music, dance, street theatre, face-painting and more during the week.

Councillor Garrett said: "To have one of the world's leading rose gardens in Belfast is fantastic, and it's great that we get to celebrate this annually with our popular Rose Week.

"This family-friendly event has something for everyone to enjoy, and access to the event couldn't be easier as there is a free shuttle bus running from Belfast City Hall every 20 minutes. I would encourage as many people as possible to come down to soak up the colour and feelgood atmosphere on offer."

Among the highlights will be the City of Belfast International Rose Trials on the Thursday, with judges from across the world arriving in the city to select the best blooms.

Also, keep on the lookout for the council's Scoop Dog, who will be encouraging visitors to share their #selfiewithscoop over the summer, via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, for a chance to win some excellent prizes for pets.

Admission is free and attractions run from 1pm-5pm every day.
