Belfast studio fined £250 for letting under-18 on sunbed
A Belfast business has been issued with a £250 fixed penalty for allowing a person under 18 use a sunbed.
The fine was issued by Belfast City Council following a test purchasing exercise at seven premises last week. The purpose of the operation was to check the level of compliance with the Sunbeds Act (NI) 2011, which makes it illegal to allow a person under the age of 18 to use a sunbed on sunbed premises.
Only one of the premises sold a session to an under-18.
The council said it was not issuing the name of the business in line "with the legal process... as they can still appeal the fixed penalty notice". A council spokeswoman said: "Sunbeds have become increasingly popular since the 1990s.
"The new law was introduced because of the growing evidence of the health risks associated with sunbed use, including skin cancer, with young people at particular risk."
