Belfast's Deputy Mayor Christopher Stalford warned of threats by 'criminal elements'
Belfast's Deputy Lord Mayor has been warned that he is under threat.
DUP councillor Christopher Stalford said the warning had been relayed to him in a phone call from the police.
"They informed me of the threat and used the phrase 'criminal elements'," he told the Belfast Telegraph last night.
"I signed on for public life – my family didn't, and whoever is responsible for threatening me is just contemptible."
He added: "If they have any issues with my politics they can put their name on a ballot paper and run against me if they wish, but the sort of people who issue threats against other people are just cowards.
"My job is to serve the people of Belfast as Deputy Lord Mayor and to serve the people of Laganbank who elected me to represent them and that's what I intend to do for as long as I can."
Several other councillors condemned the threat.
