North Down residents are being targeted in a postal scam, local MLA Peter Weir has warned.
“This particular scam takes the form of a card posted through the door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Scheme) indicating that they were unable to deliver a parcel and asking the recipient to contact them on a premium rate number.
“I would urge anyone who receives this card not to phone this number as it is a scam originating from Belize and will charge you about £315 for the phone call before you have said anything,” said Mr Weir.
Anyone affected should phone both the PSNI and Royal Mail Fraud on 020 7239 6655.
“Sadly this is unlikely to be the only criminal scam that will be attempted, and so I urge people to be vigilant at this time of economic pressure,” said the DUP representative.
“Let’s not give criminals an early Christmas present by putting people's hard-earned money into their pockets.”
He added: “It is sad and angering that people try to scam and con people at any time of the year, but it is particularly disturbing to see this criminal behaviour happening in the run up to Christmas.”
