Big barrow push to raise £50,000

A local fitness duo have set themselves a record breaking challenge to push each other the length and breadth of Northern Ireland in a bid to raise £50,000 for a charity close to their hearts.

Glenn Wilkinson (41) from Belfast and Scott McGarry (21) from Cullybackey have set themselves a six day endurance test to push each other ‘mile for mile’ in a wheel barrow throughout all six counties in Northern Ireland in the bid to raise vital funds for Freedom House – a Ballymena based charity offering support programmes to young women suffering from eating disorders, self harm, depression and abuse.

‘The Big Push for Freedom’ challenge will commence on Monday 25th June 2012 in Ballymena and will see both fitness instructors push each other a whopping 300km through local towns and villages in counties Antrim, Derry, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Armagh and Ballymena.

If the men complete the challenge this will be the first Guinness World Record for a two man wheel barrow push.

Speaking about the challenge, personal instructor Glenn Wilkinson said;

“We want to raise awareness of Freedom House because parts of NI have the highest rates of drug addiction, teenage pregnancies and deaths related to alcohol amongst young females and the charity provides a fantastic support network to help women in these situations.

“The Big Push for Freedom will be the most challenging thing we have ever done both physically and mentally. We will be pushing each other 50km in each county for a total of 12hrs per day and if we complete the challenge a Guinness World Record will be set. We have set up a Just Giving page, so should anyone like to support us, please .

Pamela McGlade from Freedom House said, “Within Northern Ireland it has been well documented that eating disorders, depression and suicide rates are all on the increase. We work with young women throughout the country to provide support in tackling and dealing with their problems and equip them with the right skills to enjoy life. We hope everyone joins us in supporting Glenn and Scott and cheering them on as they pass through our local towns and villages.”
