Bin services disrupted as cold weather continues

The refuse collection services in the Newtownabbey Borough Council area have been disrupted due to the adverse weather conditions.

Speaking on Monday, Newtownabbey Borough Council’s waste manager Jim Gurney said: “We are having difficulty today getting our vehicles around the snowy and icy roads. The vehicles weigh up to 26 tonnes when full, and manoeuvring them in residential areas is difficult in these poor road conditions.

“Staff from the street cleansing teams are helping the refuse collection teams by pulling bins from some areas where the bin lorries cannot go.

“Large areas of the borough are expected however to miss collections.”

He continued: “I would like to assure customers that every effort will be made to catch up as soon as possible and thank them for their patience. Please leave bins out as normal and we will try get there as soon as we can.”

Anyone with queries can call the cleansing section on 9034 0057/56 or visit for updates.
