Bingo woman (72) 'targeted by robbers'

By Alan Erwin

A 72-year-old woman was robbed of her glasses case as she walked home from bingo, the High Court heard.

The elderly victim was targeted by two men demanding cash in Limavady, Co Londonderry, prosecutors said.

Details emerged as one of the accused was granted bail to live in hostel accommodation.

Brian O'Hagan (22) faces a charge of robbery over the incident on December 12 last year.

The court heard the pensioner had been walking through a pedestrian area in the town at night after leaving a bingo hall.

Two men emerged from a bar and allegedly confronted her, with one asking: "Have you any money on you Mrs?"

They told her they could hear jingling and one patted her coat before she squealed out, according to the prosecution. Her glasses case was then seized from an inside pocket before the two men fled.

O'Hagan, with an address at Sperrin Road, Limavady, was arrested two days later.

He denies the offence, but the prosecuting lawyer said he has been charged on the basis of a joint enterprise.

O'Hagan was previously released on magistrates' bail, but returned to custody after allegedly cutting off his electronic tag.
