Blackmail accused is denied bail over videos

By Michael Donnelly

A man who allegedly threatened to show compromising videos of his former partner on the internet unless she paid him thousands of pounds has been refused bail.

Brian Magee (28), from Mount Street in Coleraine, is accused of blackmailing his former partner by making "unwarranted demands of £6,000" from her between January 9 and 15 last.

A police officer told North Antrim Magistrates Court that Magee believed his former lover owed him money, and contacted her via the internet, telling her if she did not pay-up, he would "release indecent images on the internet".

Magee, he told District Judge Liam McNally, was arrested and initially given police bail, but on certain conditions, including a restriction on contacting his former partner, and also of not having any equipment capable of access to the internet.

However, he was subsequently arrested outside her home while in possession of an internet tablet.

The court also heard that Magee, jailed in May for assault and due for release, has a history of breaching molestation orders.
