Fire crews at the pyre last night

“The most significant event of this year's Twelfth in Belfast was the legal precedent set down by the Bloomfield bonfire injunction,” the SDLP’s City Hall group leader has said.

Cllr Tim Attwood was speaking following a tense, however ultimately peaceful, few days of Twelfth celebrations across Belfast.

On Tuesday night, Belfast City Council secured a last-minute injunction at the High Courts that saw the controversial Bloomfield Walkway bonfire in the east of the city dismantled by contractors the following morning.

As the workers hired by Stormont’s Department for Infrastructure approached the pyre it was set alight - however a few hours later both it and the nearby Cluan Place bonfire were removed, as they were deemed a threat to life and property by the authorities.

SDLP group leader Tim Attwood said praise should be given to “all those working on the ground” in Belfast over the past few days, including the PSNI, council staff, the fire service and many others.

“At the end of the day I think the most significant and long-lasting effect of this week will be the legal precedent set down in Tuesday’s High Court injunction,” he added.

“Now, where there is a real threat to someone’s life or property, we have a legal basis to take action to ensure that risk is limited as much as possible. The days of dealing with this ‘on the night’ are gone.

Cllr Attwood said praise should also be given to “all elected representatives” across Belfast who worked “tirelessly and on a cross-party basis” to ensure the festivities so far have gone ahead relatively peacefully.

Following the removal of the two bonfires at Bloomfield and Cluan place, BCC spoke out to assure citizens that they would not be taking any action on any other bonfires, while the east Belfast UVF warned they would orchestrate “serious disorder” on Wednesday night.

The Eleventh night and Twelfth celebrations went off relatively peacefully across Belfast, however, with only a few minor incidents of disorder in the city, one of which temporarily kept passengers inside Belfast City Airport while police dealt with an incident on the Sydenham Bypass.

There was also a security alert that affected trains through Titanic Quarter for a brief period.

Mr Attwood said it was positive to see all parties at City Hall working together.

“In particular I welcome the work of the PUP’s Dr John Kyle, who spoke out against the danger of Bloomfield prior to the injunction, and Gavin Robinson of the DUP, who came out afterwards to show a united front - that’s what made difference this year and will hopefully make the difference in the future,” Cllr Attwood added.

On Friday, a council spokesperson said they “are still in the process of assessing” how the bonfires in Belfast City Council’s own bonfire scheme performed on the night, therefore “it would not be possible to comment at this time."

Meanwhile, outside City Hall there was a large protest against US President Donald Trump’s current visit to the UK.
