Body of Tyrone Afghan hero back home
The body of a County Tyrone man gunned down by an escaped prisoner in Afghanistan was brought back to Northern Ireland yesterday.
Ken McGonigle (51), who was originally from Trillick, was working as a police mentor when he was shot dead earlier this month.
He had formerly served with the PSNI in Londonderry.
His remains were flown into RAF Aldergrove and then taken to Magheramason before a private burial service on Sunday.
Mr McGonigle, a father of four, had been working for the New Century civilian security firm in Helmand province.
A statement from his family shortly after his death said “he had the heart of a lion and died a hero”.
