Bomb alert at ancient fort site was a hoax

By Amanda Poole

Army bomb disposal experts carried out a number of controlled explosions on a suspicious object in the Killylea Road area of Armagh yesterday.

The Navan visitors’ centre and a number of homes and businesses close to historic Navan Fort were evacuated during the security alert caused by the discovery of a suspicious object.

Police said the object was an elaborate hoax and has been taken away for further forensic examination.

The security alert caused considerable disruption to people as explosives experts combed a wide rural area for much of the day.

Diversions were put in place and motorists were advised to seek alternative routes after a number of roads were closed.

The Ballyrath Road and the Baltarran Road were closed to motorists, as well as sections of the Killylea Road and the Navan Fort Road.
