Bomb equipment, gun and ammunition seized in Larne

By Michael McHugh

Police have recovered a significant amount of explosives and bomb-making equipment in Larne.

The seizure was part of a joint operation between the PSNI and the Metropolitan Police.

The searches followed the arrest of Royal Marine Ciaran Maxwell, who is facing charges of stashing explosives and weapons in England and here.

PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Will Kerr said: "Police have searched 12 locations and recovered a significant amount of terrorist material including explosive devices, component parts for explosives, ammunition and a firearm.

"I am aware of the disruption this has caused to local residents and am extremely grateful for their co-operation.

"However, as I am sure the people living in Larne will understand, we will take no chances where their safety is concerned and, as a result of the significant terrorist material recovered, I am confident that the area is safer as a result."

Earlier this year police made finds in Carnfunnock Country Park and Capanagh Forest in Larne which may be linked to dissident republicans.
