Bomb hoax forces families to flee

A number of families were evacuated from their homes yesterday in a security alert.

Army bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect device taped to a lamppost at Jamaica Road in north Belfast.

Ardoyne Avenue and Ardoyne Walk in the Oldpark area were sealed off for much of the morning.

PSNI area commander, Chief Inspector Andrew Freeburn, said: “Once again the people of north Belfast have had their lives disrupted by the extremely inconsiderate action of someone leaving an elaborate hoax.

“Unfortunately it was necessary to evacuate a number of homes for safety reasons. This obviously causes disruption and distress to residents in the area but the safety of the community is of paramount importance.

“The people who carried this out have absolutely no regard for the wellbeing of this community.”
