Bookkeeper admits causing loss to former employer

By George Jackson

A former company bookkeeper has pleaded guilty to abusing her position of trust by exposing her then employer to a financial loss.

Helen McQuillan (48), from Magherafelt Road in Castledawson, admitted committing the offence against Select Kidz Retail in Tobermore between June 2015 and July 2016. She denied a second charge of stealing bank credits from her employer of just over £47,000 between the same dates.

At the Crown Court in Londonderry yesterday a defence barrister told Judge Philip Babington that the second charge the defendant denied would ultimately not trouble the court. He said the defendant had agreed to sign over the title deeds of her home to her children in return for her father making good the financial loss of just over £47,000. The barrister said the defendant's ex-husband's name was still on the title deeds, but he said he believed that matter could be resolved.

The defendant is to be sentenced on June 27 and a pre-sentence report was ordered for that date.

The defendant was released on continuing bail.
