Boy (14) is barred from going near parades

A 14-year-old boy accused of rioting in north Belfast must not go within 500 metres of any forthcoming parades, a judge ordered.

The youth, who cannot be named because of his age, appeared before Belfast Magistrates Court on charges connected with disturbances in the Carlisle Circus area. More than 60 police officers were injured in three consecutive nights of violence which erupted after a republican parade earlier this month. Loyalists protesting against the march pelted the PSNI with petrol bombs, fireworks and bricks.

The 14-year-old suspect is accused of riotous assembly and criminal damage to a tree on September 2. He also faces two counts of possessing offensive weapons, namely a firework and plank of wood. The schoolboy was remanded on bail to appear again before Belfast Youth Court on October 5.
