A child who was critically injured when he was knocked down by a car in Co Down was last night described as being in a stable condition.

The five-year-old was rushed to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children after the collision in Magheralin last Thursday evening.

He was initially fighting for his life, but a spokeswoman for the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust said he was now in a stable condition.

Meanwhile, police have re-issued their appeal for information about the incident.

The accident happened in the afternoon of January 12.

A spokesman for the PSNI said: "Police investigating the vehicle road traffic collision in Malcolmson Park in Magheralin on Thursday afternoon continue to appeal for witnesses.

"Just after 4.45pm, police received a report that a five-year-old boy had been involved in a collision with a blue Vauxhall Vectra."
