Bride and groom in custody accused of sham marriage

A bride and groom were remanded in custody today accused of taking part in a sham marriage in Belfast.

Algerian national Faredj Hamlat and Lorraine O'Brien were arrested at the alleged bogus ceremony in City Hall on Tuesday.

Hamlat (26) of no fixed address, is charged with seeking to obtain leave to enter or remain in the UK by means of deception.

O'Brien (30) also of no known address but believed to be from the Irish Republic, is accused of attempting to assist unlawful immigration by taking part in a sham marriage.

The pair appeared in the dock together at Belfast Magistrates' Court today.

After being connected to the alleged offences they were both remanded in custody until next Monday.

Bail applications are expected to be made by both accused at that stage.
