British Airways flight diverted to Belfast International Airport after 'technical issue'

British Airways flight BA1421 forced to make emergency landing

A British Airways flight from George Best Belfast City Airport airport to London Heathrow was forced to divert shortly after take-off after the pilot declared an emergency.

The plane, which had 108 passengers on board, turned and headed to Belfast International airport at Aldergrove, around 15 miles away.

The aircraft circled Aldergrove for a period before landing safely.

BA said the diversion was a "precautionary measure" taken in response to a "technical issue".

"The safety of our customers and crew is always a priority," said a spokeswoman for the airline.

"The flight landed normally after diverting shortly after take-off as a precaution following a technical issue.

"Cabin crew are now looking after our customers and they will be offered hotel accommodation and rebooked onto flights tomorrow."
