By George Jackson

Two brothers were remanded in custody when they appeared at the Magistrates Court in Londonderry yesterday charged with a combined total of 79 offences.

It follows a night of violence in the Shantallow area of the city last Tuesday.

Michael Martin Carlin (23) from Amelia Court in the Ballymagroarty estate, is charged with raping a woman, possessing a firearm, hijacking, causing criminal damage, and committing multiple driving and public order offences.

His brother Andrew (18) from Knockdara Park in the Waterside faces a total of 36 offences including possessing a firearm, hijacking cars, assaults, threatening to kill, burglaries and a series of traffic offences.

There was no application for bail and the defendants were remanded in custody for a video link court appearance on December 11.

As the defendants were being led from the dock Andrew Carlin shouted towards the parents of the alleged rape victim.

In a court appearance on Wednesday, Christopher O'Reilly (22), from Glenabbey Drive, was also remanded in custody on 32 charges linked to the same disorder.

He too will appear in court again on December 11.
