Burglars rob charity for homeless

A charity helping homeless people in Northern Ireland has become the latest victim of burglars.

Sandra Moore, director of homelessness services at The Welcome Organisation in west Belfast, called the Sunday morning break in “despicable”.

“We run a drop-in centre in St Peter’s Square and we feed up to 70 people a day there,” she said.

“They forced the door in at our head office at Twin Spires. I would imagine they were looking for money, but we don’t keep cash on site. They stole computer equipment, an overhead projector and cameras.

“During this bitterly cold weather our emphasis should be on making sure nobody is on the streets and this takes the focus and energy away from that.”

Police investigating the burglary are appealing for anyone who was in the Northumberland Street area of west Belfast on Sunday morning, or anyone who has been offered similar items for sale in dubious circumstances, to contact them on 0845 600 8000, or anonymously via the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
