Burglary accused fails in bid to get bail

An alleged serial burglar failed in a High Court bid to be released from the jail where his brother committed suicide.

Dublin man Martin Connors is being held on remand at HMP Maghaberry on charges connected to break-ins in Co Armagh.

Although the raids occurred during 2010 and 2011, he was only arrested in London last month.

Connors (21), of Hazel Hill, Tallaght, faces charges of burglary, burglary with intent and criminal damage.

Seeking bail, a defence lawyer told the court: "There has been tragic circumstances in his family. His mother is concerned for him being in Maghaberry. Last year his brother was in Maghaberry and committed suicide."

It was stressed that there is no suggestion of the accused suffering from mental health issues.

A Prison Service spokesman later confirmed that 28-year-old James Connors, who also used the name Michael McDonagh, was found dead in the jail last October.

Bail was refused due to the risk of further offending as well as concerns that the accused may not turn up for trial.
