CAB offers school cost tips

A new change on the issue of school costs has been introduced in Northern Ireland which may help to ease the pressure of school costs for some working families, the Citizen Advice Bureau (CAB) has said.

School uniform grants and free school meals have been available for parents on certain benefits for some years now.

However, this school year the criteria for these have been widened to include some parents who are in receipt of Working Tax Credit (WTC).

Parents who are receiving WTC are eligible for free school meals and uniform grants if their yearly taxable income is £16,190 or less.

These new rules will only initially apply to children who were born on or after July 2, 2002, therefore children over eight years of age will not be eligible this school year.

Citizens Advice has published a free fact sheet on help with school costs which available online at
