Call centre worker jailed for £25k theft from woman

By Ashleigh McDonald

A woman who abused her position as a call centre operator to defraud a bank customer of £25,000 was jailed for three years yesterday.

Alina Maria Cepoi (27) - who at the time of her offending was living and working in Belfast - claimed she was acting under duress from a fellow Romanian national who was her former drug dealer and who followed her from Spain.

A financial investigation was launched by Lloyd's Banking Group in February, centring on a transfer of £25,000 from a Halifax bank account held by a woman in Middlesex.

Police searched Cepoi's Woodstock Road home, where they found a number of documents as well as cocaine and a cutting agent.

Judge Miller told Cepoi that the fraud she committed was both serious and a gross breach of trust.
