Call for crackdown on illegal dumping of tyres

More than 100 tyres have been dumped on the edge of the Belfast Road at Nutts Corner in the latest in a series of illegal dumping incidents.

Crumlin and Mallusk Sinn Fein councillor Anne Marie Logue said numerous tyres had been dumped in the area in recent weeks.

"Over recent weeks there have been a number of places that have experienced the illegal dumping of tyres, including this site and at the Ballyhill Road," she said.

"Those responsible care little for local people or the local environmental impact.

"The financial effect is that the cost of clean-up and disposal will have to be met by Antrim Borough Council or the Department for Regional Development. This will be ratepayers' money going to tackle this scourge, diverting much needed funding from other projects."

Councillor Logue also called for stricter regulation on those responsible.

"What we need to see is tougher enforcement of the regulations or indeed revised legislation to deal with this matter.

"I have contacted the PSNI regarding this issue and they have assured me they were taking the matter seriously."
