Calling all runners... it's time to limber up for big race

By Staff Reporter

Tom Wylie is the treasurer of Mallusk Harriers. On Friday, August 15 at 7pm it is hosting its first five mile road race event, starting and finishing at the Academy Sports Club in Mallusk.

Tom said: "When I come from a club/race meeting there is always a feeling of community and club camaraderie. I love it.

"We have been in existence for a relatively short time in the Mallusk area of Newtownabbey and have attracted a membership of some 30 members so far.

"To promote the club we have engaged widely through Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

"We cater for all ages, abilities and disciplines and you are welcome to join us for a few sessions to see if it is your thing.

"You will certainly be assured of a warm welcome.

"On August 15, we are hosting our first race event which is a huge event for a club in its first year.

"The mayor will not only be attending to formally start the race but will be participating also.

"The support we are getting for the race is pretty awesome.

"Local people, Mallusk Community Action Group, Newtownabbey Council and sponsors such as Chain Reaction Cycles and Mallusk Carpets have been very good to us."
