Cameroonian man appears in Derry court on rape charge

By George Jackson

A man from Cameroon has appeared at Londonderry Magistrates Court charged with raping a woman in the city nine years ago.

Chinedu Oniyenike (40), whose address was given as Cliff View Hostel in Donegal Town, is alleged to have raped the woman on September 21, 2008.

A detective said she could connect the defendant to the charge.

She said that the defendant was detained by police on Monday night in London after they became aware that both local and international arrest warrants had been issued against him.

There was no bail application and the defendant was remanded in custody to appear again on January 4.
