Car is still the star for getting us to our work

By Linda Stewart

Two in three of us drive ourselves to work, according to a new survey of Northern Ireland’s travel habits.

And the reasons why most |of us are deterred from walk-|ing and cycling short journeys are bad weather, having to |carry heavy shopping and busy roads.

The 2011 Government report |on Public Awareness of |Travelwise NI Initiatives re-|vealed that 66% of people who travel to work drive a car or van, 10% car share, and 5% get a lift. Only 7% say they usually walk to work.

Those who make a regular journey to school go for slightly greener options — 55% drive a car or van; one in five walks (19%); one in 10 takes a bus (10%); 7% car share and 6% get a lift in a car or van.

Fourteen per cent of respondents in the 2011 survey said they have heard of the Travelwise NI initiative. However, more people had heard of Travelwise initiatives such as Walk to School week, Bike Week, Park and Ride, Park and Share and Travelwise Car Sharing Schemes.
