A community football pitch in west Belfast has been destroyed by vandals in a night of disorder.

A car was repeatedly driven over the pitch in Falls Park, leaving tyre marks embedded in the grass, destroying the surface.

The car was then burnt out and dumped nearby.

The pitch is owned by Belfast City Council and is frequently used by residents across the community.

A council spokeswoman said the pitch will now have to be closed while repairs are carried out.

“The facilities at Falls Park are well used and enjoyed by the local community so it’s extremely disappointing to see them damaged in this way," they said.

"The extent of the damage means the pitch will be out of use for some time while repairs are carried out and estimated costs are unknown at present.

“The Council continues to work in partnership with the local community and statutory agencies, including the PSNI, to address anti-social behaviour and criminality and we would encourage anyone who witnessed the incidents to make a report to the PSNI on 101.”
