Carcasses of starved horses left by road near Armagh beauty spot

By Adrian Rutherford

A horse which was starved to death has been dumped by the roadside near a south Armagh beauty spot in a shocking case of animal cruelty.

The decomposing remains were found on the Mountain Lodge Road near Darkley, with a second horrifically emaciated horse carcass discarded nearby.

It is believed the remains were abandoned at the weekend and were left rotting for three days before being removed yesterday afternoon.

The case has shocked the rural community, which is close to a forest area popular with locals.

SDLP councillor Thomas O'Hanlon said it was one of the worst examples of animal cruelty he had encountered. "This is animal cruelty at its very worst," he told the Belfast Telegraph.

It is understood the owner of the animals has been traced.

David Wilson from the USPCA said the owner should be prosecuted.
