Castlewellan tree tops Northern Ireland awards list
A giant redwood in Co Down has been crowned Northern Ireland's Tree of the Year.
The four regional winners of the competition, organised by the Woodland Trust, were decided by public vote and revealed yesterday.
Northern Ireland's winner stands within the walled garden at Castlewellan Forest Park.
Now more than 160 years old, it was planted as a sapling by the Annesley family, the former owners of the Castlewellan demesne.
It beat off competition from five other trees to land the title.
Tree enthusiasts Dr Sally Montgomery of Castlewellan Futures' Heritage Group and Ann Irwin of Arboretum Regeneration Castlewellan had given their support to the Co Down winner.
